Leaders Need A Clear Vision

Posted in Educational Leadership, Global Leadership, J. R. R. Tolkien, Leadership, Leadership Development by Dr. Byron L. Ernest on October 30, 2026

At one point in The Lord of the Rings we find Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, tracking the hobbits through the strange Forest of Fangorn. This is when we see J.R.R. Tolkien giving us more leadership lessons for application. Fleming Rutledge, in The Battle for Middle-earth: Tolkien’s Divine Design in The Lord of the Rings said that, “In this portion of the story, Aragorn is struggling to find his way as a leader, a process that interested Tolkien greatly.” Aragorn was a Ranger and had great skills but did not have a clear sense of what the group’s goals are other than rescuing Merry and Pippin, and little idea about how to do that.

This was a reminder of how important a shared vision is. A clear vision provides direction and focus. It serves as a guiding star for decision-making and prioritization, helping leaders and teams to stay on track even in challenging times. A shared vision can help teams, like those in The Lord of the Rings, navigate obstacles and setbacks by reminding them of their ultimate goals. This resilience can be a game-changer in overcoming challenges together. Organizations with a strong, shared vision often attract like-minded talent who are passionate about the same goals. This can lead to a more cohesive and motivated workforce.
