Being Deliberate

Fleming Rutledge made an interesting observation in The Battle for Middle-earth: Tolkien’s Divine Design in The Lord of the Rings. She said, “It is compelling, in life as in fiction, when a person who is deliberate in thought and slow to action finally makes a decision to move forcefully. Such a person can be worth more than a multitude of hotheads.” The quote highlighted the value of careful deliberation and thoughtful decision-making, especially in situations that require decisive action. In both life and fiction, characters who take their time to consider their choices can have a profound impact when they finally commit to a course of action.
This contrasts with those who may act impulsively or without much thought. These types might be numerous but lack the weight of conviction or strategy that a more thoughtful individual possesses. This all underscores the importance of wisdom and patience in leadership and conflict resolution, suggesting that true strength lies not just in being quick to act, but in knowing when and how to act decisively.
Rutledge gave us a reflection on the quality of leaders and decision-makers, advocating for a mindful approach rather than one driven by haste or emotion.
