Staying Motivated and Resilient as We Work Toward Our Desires

I am a huge fan of the show Marshals. In the season finale last night it looked like Andrea Santos (Ash Santos) is leaving the team and Montana to go to D.C. She had viewed the posting in Montana as a temporary “detour” on her path to bigger ambitions. Her leaving shocked the team and in a conversation with team leader Pete Calvin “Cal” (Logan Marshall-Green), he said, “Make sure you’re running toward something you want, not away from something.” That comment made me think about our tendency to do that at times in real life.

For me, the phrase reminded me that instead of focusing on avoiding or escaping from something we fear, dislike, or are uncomfortable with, we should direct our energy toward pursuing something positive and meaningful. An example would be, rather than running away from failure or criticism, we should focus on achieving our goals, learning new skills, or embracing opportunities that excite us. This mindset reminds me of that of a firefighter who runs toward the fire and danger. That mindset encourages growth, motivation, and a proactive attitude.
